The Institute

 - Promotes technology thought and action, and

 - Prepares needed technical human resources to meet the technology challenges of the nation.



The Institute is engaged in

- Creating a vibrant technology institute that incubates and promotes learning, research, invention and eventually innovation; and

- Preparing each primary stakeholder towards their dharma, while continuing to adhere to its core values:

  (a) Prepare competent Technology Graduates ready to meet Grand Challenges of India;

  (b) Train active functionaries of a process driven professional institute;

  (c) Facilitate builders of an internationally competitive academic institute; and

  (d) Provide technology innovation as a force to as many industries as possible for economic value creation.

Way back in 1946, an idea grew in visionary leaders of the country, of creating of Higher Technical Institutes for post-war industrial development in India. A Committee, headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, recommended the establishment of these institutes in various parts of India. The first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 at Kharagpur. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, at the First Convocation of IIT Kharagpur in 1956, clarified in his Address that these institutes of technology will help meet the technological challenges of the Nation. During 1959-1960 four IITs were established at Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur and Madras. Subsequently, on 15 September 1956, the Parliament of India passed an act known as the Institutes of Technology (Kharagpur) Act, 1961 declaring IIT Kharagpur as an Institute of national importance. Also, IIT Kharagpur was given the status of an autonomous University. Thereupon, IIT Guwahati started in 1992, and also the then University of Roorkee was given the status of an IIT (and now called IIT Roorkee) in 2001.

Establishment of eight more IITs across the country began with a decision of the Cabinet, which was announced by the Minister of Human Resource Development on 28 March 2008. IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur (earlier called IIT Rajasthan), IIT Patna and IIT Ropar began functioning from 2008, and two others, IIT at Indore and IIT Mandi commenced their sessions from 2009. During the past decades since 1956, IITs became hallmark of quality technology undergraduate education internationally, attributed largely to ambience for quality academics. The endeavor at IIT Jodhpur is to live up to this brand image, which has been built meticulously over the last 60 years, with a renewed focus of producing world-class technology-driven graduates to contribute towards the development of the nation.

A fresh approach at IIT Jodhpur

A new institute of technology starting in India in 2010’s should reflect on the way technical education has been conducted in the country since the country’s independence (accentuate the strengths and eliminate the weaknesses therein), and make new beginnings on a number of fronts that remained unaddressed in the Institutes in the past. This is the precise recipe that we followed at IIT Jodhpur over the past year to cast the master plan of the Institute’s academic (and infrastructure) development. Started in 2008-09 with 7 other new IITs, IIT Jodhpur has had the courage to experiment new models of building a technical institute; yes, some worked well and others did not. But, one point is clear, we learnt the courage to think fresh…

In keeping with the vision for Indian Institutes of Technology of the 1940s, IIT Jodhpur is being planned and prepared to provide creative technological solutions to meet the technology grand challenges of the nation. Two pronged approach is taken at the Institute to achieve this goal, namely

(1) Technology focus in all activities at the Institute; and

(2) Professionalisation of the Institute for improved efficiency and efficacy in achieving the needed calm in the environment at the

Institute, skills in the personnel, and systems & processes to ensure technology focus.

IIT Jodhpur’s development plan rides on one bottom line – to establish a top teaching-learning institute doing good quality research addressing the technological challenges of the nation. The key words here are: top, learning, quality, technology and nation. Hence, five pillars were identified to form the framework of IIT Jodhpur’s fresh strategic plan.


1. Sectoral Technology Institute

IIT Jodhpur is on a steep development agenda. In the initial years, we are establishing the basics of a Technology Institute with strong teaching and research focus. In the next few years, the institute has set itself the goal of growing in to a Sectoral Technology Institute with strong industrial research, but with limited technology focus areas, like energy and fuels, critical technologies, water, automotives and transport, and healthcare. In the long term, IIT Jodhpur is expected to grow towards providing holistic technology education to its students in association with national institutes in India.


2. Industry immersion-based Blended Technical Education

          IIT Jodhpur has launched its flagship Blended B.Tech. Program – a unique blend of classroom instructions at the Institute and shop floor experience in the Industry. It exploits interconnections between academia and industry, and by providing opportunities to understand the needs of the nation and thereby meaningfully engaging with the Indian society. Students and Faculty Members will immerse inside a leading technology Industry during three successive summers. Other features of this Program include:

(1) Learning-by-doing,

(2) Experiential and cooperative learning,

(3) Working on live assignments under the tutelage of industry professionals, and

(4) Engaging in industry-supported projects spanning over 2½ years starting IV semester.

It will prepare Students and Faculty Members to meet eventually the grand challenges of Indian technology industry; the program helps build leadership skills in both of these stakeholders. This model has now been chosen for the Masters and Doctoral Programs also. Already, L&T, TVS, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Power Limited have pledged their partnership in this flagship program by signing agreements with the Institute.

3. Professionally run Institute

        During 2014, the Institute consciously chose a path of academic accountability on its journey of development by (a) systematically disinvesting time of Faculty Members in non-academic activities, and (b) embedding performance management processes in its strategic plan. The Balanced Scorecard Method (to watch performance indicators) brings accountability in the working of Faculty and Staff Members of the Institute through this multidimensional framework. Work has begun at the policy and leadership levels to stitch concepts of Balanced Scorecard in to the day-to-day activities of employees with the institute’s long-term strategic objectives: namely (i) Teaching-Learning, (ii) Student-centricity, (iii) Technology focus, (iv) Quality-based institute development, and (v) Technology Human Resources for India.

4. Technology Orientation

       In a silent surge towards the Industry, IIT Jodhpur has chosen to engage with industry partners to embark on technology product development – an end-to-end effort on research-oriented product development, especially useful and relevant to India. This focused technology development at the Institute is expected to establish and build collaborations between IIT Jodhpur, Industry and other academic and R&D organizations in India.

5. Alignment with National Technology Missions

          IIT Jodhpur is constructing a Technology Park to strengthen its industry interactions, on its permanent campus for harvesting technologies of national importance. This IITJ Technology Park is poised to host the Solar Energy Technology development and Defence Technologies. Discussions are underway with Government and private industries to work on other select national technology missions, like water, healthcare and automotives.

          Today, India has to build a competitive edge over other emerging economies with its strategic research outcomes, patented technologies, surge in innovation, high productivity of human resources, reduced cost of products, and high quality products and services, to ensure economic growth of India. Premier institutes of technology have the onus to shoulder responsibilities in this major national crusade. And, at IIT Jodhpur, we have taken seriously this clarion call for re-casting afresh our model of technical education.

Eligibility criteria for appearing in JEE (Advanced) – 2019

(Please refer to JEE (Advanced) website for the latest information)
The minimum academic qualification for appearing in JEE (Advanced) -2019 is that the
candidate must have passed in final examination of Class 12th or equivalent qualifying
examination (Appendix–3). Those appearing in these examinations in 2019 can also appear in
JEE (Advanced)- 2019 provisionally.

All the candidates aspiring to take admission to the undergraduate programs at IITs for the
year 2019 will have to appear in the Paper-1 (B. E. /B. Tech.) of JEE (Main)-2019. Based on the
performance in Paper-1 (B. E. /B. Tech.) of JEE (Main)-2019, number of top candidates as per
the requirement of JEE (Advanced) (including all categories) will be eligible to appear in JEE

Admissions to IITs will be based only on category-wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Advanced),
subject to conditions as defined in JEE (Advanced)–2019 website.

A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in consecutive years
irrespective of whether or not he/she passed the Qualifying Examination. The candidates, who
have attempted JEE (Main) /JEE (Advanced) in 2017 or earlier, are NOT ELIGIBLE to appear in
JEE (Advanced)–2019.

The candidate who had taken admission in any institute other than IITs in 2018 is eligible to
appear in JEE (Advanced)–2019 provided that the candidate satisfies other eligibility criteria.


Application procedure for JEE (Main)-2019 and JEE (Advanced)–2019
In order to appear in JEE (Main)-2019 and JEE (Advanced) 2019, the candidates are required
to apply only online as per procedure detailed below (Please also see section 5.6 for JEE

List of Qualifying Examinations

I. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board,
such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School
Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc.

II. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/

III. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence

IV. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling
with a minimum of five subjects.

V. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized
as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

VI. H.S.C. vocational examination. [Only for Admission to IITs]

VII. A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education of at least 3 year
duration. [Only for Admission to IITs]

VIII. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced
(A) level. [Only for Admission to IITs]

IX. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate
Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva. [Only for Admission to IITs]

X. In case the relevant QE is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least
one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

State Code of Eligibility

State Code of eligibility means the Code of the State from where the candidate has passed Class 12th
/Equivalent qualifying examination by virtue of which he/she becomes eligible to appear in the JEE
(Main) for admission to B.E/B. Tech. and B. Arch./B. Planning Courses of the institutions/Colleges of
the States/UT.
